Preparations
The SLS rocket for Artemis I was originally rolled out to the launch pad March 17, 2022. The first two Wet Dress Rehearsal (WDR) attempts on April 3 and 4th were scrubbed due to launch pad issues, but one was ultimately performed not long after. However, due to issues with the ICPS, they didn't fuel the upper stage. NASA teams discovered a Hydrogen leak during that WDR which prompted a rollback to the VAB.
A fourth WDR attempt was performed June 20 of the following year, however due to a hydrogen leak the countdown timer ended early at T-20s. Then the rocket was rolled back to the VAB on July 2 to fix those Hydrogen leaks.
The first launch attempt for Artemis I was set for August 29, 2026 which was scrubbed due to high engine temperatures, hydrogen leaks, and ground communication problems. Another attempt for September 3 was also scrubbed due to continued hydrogen leaks. It wasn't until the third attempt on November 16th that Artemis I finally launched from the KSC.
Flight
Artemis I launched at 1:47am EST achieving orbit in about 8.5 minutes. About 89 minutes into flight, the ICPS burned for about 15min to propel Orion and 10 cubsat satellites into a trans lunar ejection. These small satellites would study radiation and perform other scientific research. On November 25, Orion performed a burn to put itself in retrograde lunar orbit. The following day Artemis I broke Apollo 13's record being the furthest a human rated spacecraft has traveled from Earth.
Artemis I finally splashed down December 11 traveling almost 25,000 miles.
Post Analysis
Upon retrieval of the capsule, NASA discovered unexpected loss of a protective layer of the heatshield. The protective outer layer made from AVCOAT is supposed to break away carrying heat away from the capsule, however the loss was more significant than previously expected. Took two years to find the issue to suggest recommendations.
